Exploring sensory play: 3 fun and easy activities for nannies and toddlers

Sensory activities play a vital role in a toddler's development, engaging their senses and stimulating their curiosity. As a nanny, incorporating sensory play into your daily routine can provide countless opportunities for learning and exploration. In this blog, we'll explore three simple yet exciting sensory activities that you can conduct with toddlers, fostering their cognitive and motor skills while creating meaningful bonds during playtime.

1. Cloud Dough Sensation:

Cloud dough, also known as moon sand, is a wonderful sensory activity that mimics the feel of sand but with a unique soft and moldable texture. To create cloud dough, combine 2 cups of flour with 1/4 cup of baby oil in a large mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients until they form a crumbly yet moldable consistency.

To conduct the activity, lay a large plastic sheet on the floor or use an inflatable baby pool as a contained play area. Allow the toddlers to dive their hands into the cloud dough, encouraging them to mold and shape it freely. You can also add small toys or scoops to enhance their exploration. Not only will this activity be incredibly engaging, but it will also enhance their fine motor skills and sensory awareness.

2. Rainbow Rice Discovery:

Rainbow rice is a colorful and versatile sensory medium that captivates toddlers with its vibrant hues and pleasing texture. To make rainbow rice, divide a batch of white rice into separate containers and add a few drops of food coloring to each. Seal the containers and shake them to distribute the color evenly.

Create a sensory bin by filling a large plastic container with rainbow rice. Provide scoops, cups, and funnels for the toddlers to pour and transfer the rice, stimulating their hand-eye coordination and creative exploration. This activity allows for countless imaginative play possibilities and sensory stimulation through touch and sight.

3. Sensory Water Play:

Water play is a classic sensory activity that delights toddlers and provides numerous learning opportunities. Fill a shallow container with water and place it outdoors or on a protected surface indoors. Add floating toys, cups, funnels, and sponges to the water.

Encourage toddlers to explore and splash in the water, promoting tactile and visual stimulation. They can fill and pour water, feel the wetness on their skin, and observe the movement of objects in the water. Supervise closely, and this sensory water play will undoubtedly become a favorite activity.

Sensory activities are a fantastic way for nannies to engage toddlers in playful learning experiences. Through sensory play, you can foster a love for learning and stimulate their cognitive growth while building a strong and nurturing bond with the little ones under your care.
